PLANTING GUIDE OF F1 WATERMELON SEEDS - QUEEN 56

                                   (GOLDEN COIN SEEDS)

I/ Feartures:

 - Strong plant.

 - Harvesting: 65 - 70 days after sowing.

 - Fruit size: 25 - 26 cm length, 14 - 15 cm diameter.

 - Fruit characteristics: oblong fruit shape, thin and light green skin, sweet and bright red flesh, few white fibers. Brilength,: 12 - 14.

 - Yield: 3 - 4 kg/fruit.

III. Cropping season:

• South Vietnam: all round year growing.
• North Vietnam: from February to September

IV. Soaking and incubation seeds:

* Prepare warm water 50 – 52^oC:

- Mixing 40% boiling water (95 – 100^oC) with 60% fresh water (25 – 30^oC) got from drilled well or water faucet.

* Soaking seeds:

- Soak the seeds in warm water as prepared in 6 – 8 hours.

* Incubation seeds:

- Get the towel or T – shirt (or fabrics can be moisturizing), washed, squeezed just enough moisture (about 80 – 85%).

- Get the seeds as soaked spread thin on the towels, then put these towels in dark, warm place (around  28 – 30^oC).

If it’s cold, put these towels in warm place or lighting. After incubation in 22 – 24h, should rinse seeds in warm water and incubation again.

* Sowing seeds:

- After 38 – 42 hours, the seeds will germinate, please sow these seeds in the nursery. Sow the germinated seeds to pots have environment including: 2 parts of muck + 1 part of soil. After sowing seeds get filled environment and sufficient moisture for irrigation.

- Wash the seeds have not germinated and towels then incubated again, about 10 hours later, the seeds will germinate, continue sowing.

- After 3 – 4 days, seeds  germinated (if it’s cold, should if cover the area sowing by white nylon to keep their warm), after 16 – 20 days (seedling have 2 leaves), can be planted in field.

V. Planting and maintenance:

1. Fertilizers (for 1.000 m²):

Fertilizer application for cultivation depends on geographic conditions, however, we recommend applying the following guides are applied very effectively to many growing areas for you refer and apply.

• Should be applied lime at tillage to increase fertilizer efficiency.
• Should be applied fertilizer far enough from the plant foot, deep enough (6 – 7 cm) to increase fertilizer efficiency.
• Should be weeding combined with fertilizing times to increase fertilizer efficiency.

2. Pruning branches:

- Should pruning the branches, leaving only one tree each main vine and two lateral branches.

- Should guide them perpendicular to the bed or are on the trellis.

3. Selection and additional pollination:

- Pollinating for the flowers 2nd and 3rd.

- Each plant pollinating three flowers, one on the main stem and two others on two lateral branches.

- After plants have fruit 5 – 6 days, selecting the fruit have balance shape, big stalk, no scratches and remove two others.

VI. Plant protection:

* Fusarium Wilt:

- It usually occurs when the plant begins to flower or small fruit. The plant wilt disease when noon sun, afternoon woke up, a few days after the plant dies.

- Preventing and treating by crop rotation, good drainage, spray with a fungicide such as: Metalaxyl, Thiophanate methyl 70%, Metalaxyl M + Mancozeb…

- When infected plants using antibiotics such as: Oxolinic acid 20%, Oxytetracycline hydrochloride 55% + streptomyxin sunphate 35%,…

* Viral disease:

- Diseases transmitted by sucking insects such as thrips, hoppers, aphids,... very harmful in the dry season.

- Preventing and treating: should remove and bury the infected plants, spray the lower side of the leaves with the following chemicals: Chlorpyrifos Methyl (min 96%), Dynotefuran (min 89%), Clothianidin,.../
